The death of the 2012 civil unions bill on the second to the last day of the legislative session provided for one of the most dramatic moments in recent Colorado political history.
Republicans, who were in charge of the House then, refused to call it up for a vote knowing Democrats had the votes to pass it. But Democrats are in charge now and a civil unions bill passed the House today and is headed to the governor for his signature.
Former Speaker Frank McNulty blames Democrats for what happened last year in this video interview shot today, saying they “stalled” for their own “particular political purposes.” But Republican Rep. Cheri Gerou of Evergreen, who voted for the bill, has a different take in her video interview. She said she was ashamed at what Republicans did last May.
